who's "Banks" anyway?

volleyball players

 ...Well...what’s sexy to me.                                                            repost
I’m like the judge who couldn’t define pornography “but I know it when I see it.”
So as I list a few things that females which, to me, are “sexy” don’t ask why cause I don’t know.
Gals who drive pickup trucks. (don’t ask)
Females pumping their own gas.
Female police officers & security guards. Get that Margate Meg!
Most women doctors...and nurses.
Waitresses
Private school girls in school skirts.
Female volleyball players (no soccer...sorry Gabby at Arizona)
All cheerleaders
Gals in cowboy hats.
Women/girls with great ponytails.

“Banks” when she performs. She’s great but kinda “scary”.
Selena Gomez ANYTIME (except on Kimmel’s Show)
Let me try to define this just a bit but I’ll probably just confuse you.
Kate Middleton is not “sexy”.  She is a raving beauty to be admired that way.
Selena is BOTH a beauty and sexy.
Selena in the guise of her fantastic character “CORDILIA” from Monte Carlo was sexy but "mean sexy".  I’d LOVE to be “disciplined” by her.
Selena as Cordilia

Got that?  Probably not...cause now I’m confused.

(to be continued...maybe)

My predictions on the ads...Brunettes rule...on the game...Hawks fly high...Pats deflated!

             ....Blondes vs Brunettes in advertising.
Such hype as I’ve never seen before about the Superbowl Commercials...the dog...and all that.
Anyway...if you wish you can be an observer like me and note that gals with dark hair seem to have taken over!
That makes me very pleased and I will always pay attention to the like of Cindy Crawford and others of her hair ilk who are prevalent in the ads on tv now.

Just look closely at the beer and soda spots and you will see many lovely pointed headed girls and they almost always have dark hair....not even one blonde  in sight!
What’s the old saying “blondes have more fun”.  They need to work harder on the ad teams casting couch!
                                                   ____________________

Big football games , I think, are usually crap. One team dominates and the other doesn’t even show up. Here’s my prediction for the weekend for what it’s worth(nothing).
The Hawks will fly high..the Pats will play like their air’s been deflated.
    We’ll see.
The only interesting thing for me is my new tv.  This will be my first ever viewing of a really big game on HD. That is if I select the HD channel and not the normal one.  Until I got the Comcast HD listings I was doing that.
Oh and do you think  the tv dudes will show the cheerleaders legs in this one?  One would hope.    I say show em...despite the complaints of the wives watching their men folks go “wow” all the time.

Whistle Duck update. I Didn’t see the beautiful beige ducks from the north for a few days.  It got cooler here in south Florida...in the 50’s at night for the past week and they seem to have disappeared.
I hoped they hadn’t decided to fly back up north because the weather there has been atrocious.
Yesterday afternoon in my car I made a right turn toward the mailboxes and sitting just off the roadway (I wish they wouldn’t do that) were the two main Whistle Ducks...enjoying the bright sunshine as visitors here do.    They looked as elegant as ever.
    Now...they’ve disappeared again.  Oh well.

That new Walmart is about to open here!

....The new neighborhood Walmart will be open February 11th! The is the one near me...about three or four blocks to the south.  The one I usually shop at is a bit further to the north...so this one will be great. I can even walk to it with no problem.
    Now...a couple of question arise.
Will they keep the old one open .  They are paying rent there (not good) while the new Walmart is a stand alone owned by them.
If they do close one I hope that staff is shifted to the new one.  They are pretty good folks and they keep things running.

Of MORE importance to me is the question of my favorite store...Dollar Tree which is smack dab in the middle of these two Walmarts.  Not a strong position I’ll grant you but they do a whopping bit of business so I’m hoping they won’t be done in.
The next Dollar Tree would be about a 10-12 block drive.

"If You Go Away"...Rod McKuen is gone...but NOT forgotten

    Rod McKuen RIP....

....In the 50’s and 60’s regardless where I was broadcasting from...and even into the later years of my national talk show...Rod McKuen’s “If You Go Away” was a staple of my show.  There was a period when I used it to close my show each night.
Rod passed away at age 81 having left a virtual “bevy” of music...poems...taped concerts etc. for all of us the cherish.
    Here is Billboard Magazine’s obit:

        ...Rod’s website:

     “Rod: “If You Go Away”:

P.S.  Two more things about Rod McKuen.... He was the ultimate cat lover....just like me and
...little known and probably not going to make it into his obit...he was extremely active in getting more money for musicians...singers...writers etc...working with ASCAP & BMI.
Judging for the increased profitability on their part...it seems to have worked.

What do Joan Crawford, Paula Prentiss and the Boston Strangler have in common? In Boston at the same time!

Paula Prentiss

Boston name dropping...

Joan Crawford....Paula Prentiss...(phone sex later...just kidding)...Arnie “Woo Woo” Ginsburg...talker Jerry Williams... Jack Kennedy and....

        ....The Boston Strangler!

How’s that for a lineup to talk about!

WMEX Radio in Boston was big.  I mean huge in ratings and making money....and making hit records.  We’ll have a firm example coming up.  Stay tuned.

Arnie Ginsburg may have invented “payola”...that is a DJ taking money to play records on his show.

In 1962-63 there were no federal laws prohibiting this so “hands all out” as they say.  Mac Richmond, the owner was probably getting his share as I was pressured by Mac while at his station WPGC in DC to play the hell out of certain records.  Mac was “sound deaf” so why else would he do that!

I never got any cash for playing records but I did get two tickets to any Broadway play...sixth row center..and I saw a bunch. My free tickets from the record folks were so good that one time I was seated in front of Gwen Verdon!  I think that was for Jackie Gleason in “Take Me Away”.

In Boston, Mac handed me a ticket for a show having it’s pre-broadway opening.  It was called “Funny Girl” and featured an unknown singer named Barbra Streisand.  She sang the song “People” for the very first time publicly that night and it knocked me out.  I knew it would be a huge hit song and make her and the show famous.  The only problem was the third act which “sucked” and they knew it so they closed down for a few days and rewrote it.  Of course I was right about the song and the show...one of the biggest Broadway hits in a long time.  And about the star...of course.

WMEX had an afternoon DJ named Melvin X. Melvin (really a station name used by any jocks in that time slot).

The guy’s real name was Jim MacKrell and he would go on to Hollywood as an actor and later appeared in things like

“Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death”

Ha!

But he did make his mark in 1970-74 hosting the successful gameshow “Celebrity Sweepstakes”.

But here’s my point.  To show you how hot that show and that station(WMEX) was in Boston...Jimmy had a Hooper share of 52%.

Hooper was the radio audience measurement outfit popular at that time.

Now the 52% meant that HALF  of ALL radio listeners were tuned to Melvin X Melvin’s show.  That is just unbelievable and incredible but true.  As good share might be a 10 or 12 but Jim had a 52.  In my 50 years in broadcasting I never saw that again.  It was very unusual to say the least.

Let me give you another example of the power of that show and the station.

I was doing the news on Jim’s show each day.

The Beach Boys were hot and had just released new new single called “Little Duce Coup” which we played and played and played until I couldn’t stand it anymore.  I got a copy of the 45 and just for the hell of it it flipped it over on audition in the newsroom and guess what...I heard the next number one record in the country.  It was called “Little Surfer Girl” and Nobody was playing that side.

I rushed into the control room and off the air I challenged Jim to flip the record and play it.

He did and we never played what the record company had called the “A” side...the Coup thing again!  So we broke that record on Jim’s show and stations in New York City and up and down the eastern seaboard that could hear WMEX also flipped the record and in about six to ten weeks yep, you guessed it... “Little Surfer Girl” WAS number one in the country!  I took all the credit!

Ha...dating in the Strangler era...

Just try to approach or make a date with a female in the midst of the Boston Strangler phenomena.

Forget it.  I think I got one airline stewy to go to dinner and that’s about it.

Girls only dated guys they knew from work or school or whatever and they gave the jaundiced eye to all strangers.

It was boring and frightening...seeing the headline in the morning paper that another body had been found. Ugh.

Just in from Hollywood...Paula...and Joan...as different as good be.

One girl I did have a good time with...interviewing for work and chatting late into the midnight hours for my benefit...was the extremely good looking actress, Paul Prentiss, who was promoting a film with Rock Hudson called “Men’s Favorite Sport”.  (Note:  You can see all of Paula and I do mean ALL in her nude scene in the boat in a later film Catch 22. check it out!)

The interview was only about ten minutes but we seemed to hit it off and I was enamored by her beautiful brown eyes and dark hair.  So I came right out and ask her if we could chat later.  She invited me to call her hotel and that evening, late, took my call.

We talked for an hour or so and then she invited me to have breakfast with her the next morning.

With the light of day Paula must have had a change of heart...as I couldn’t get thru to her the next morning.

She had been asking me a lot of questions about the radio business.  She wondered if her husband, Richard Benjamin, should get into it.  Thank goodness she didn’t push it...as he went on to have an excellent career directing pictures.

As nice as the Paula Prentiss encounter was...I can’t say the same for Joan Crawford.  But you must understand...Miss Crawford had been at the top of the star list for many years and acted the part in her in-person appearances. It was a tough  interview...and not pleasant for either of us, I’m sure.

Two huge stars who came thru Boston almost the same week...and were as different as night and day.

JFK...in person.

Mac Richmond must have contributed heavily to the Democrats as he invited me to accompany him to a banquet in Boston featuring President Kennedy.

This was in the summer of ‘63 and probably JFK’s last political foray to Boston before November and his trip to Texas.

The seats were good up on the dias...and the food was ok (after all it was the Prez eating it too just about a quarter of the way down the table from us.)

Nothing spectacular was said...unusual for JFK and I found the most interesting element was the secret service and watched them intently...my first close up of that kind of thing.

I remember one eagle eyed and totally concentrated agent moving fairly fast below our dais seats  and watching a waiter behind me.

I got the feeling that that agent would have been over the table and on that waiter at the slightest indiscretion.  It was a interesting side show.

Too bad the agents in Dallas weren’t as “concentrated” on their job.  Right?

the race track

Mac had some friends in the race horse biz and they invited us to dinner at one of Boston’s finest seafood restaurants and then to attend the track as their guests. Just before we were set to meet Mac called and said he couldn’t make it but that I should go and have a good time.  He said these guys were paying for everything...including my bets!  So...why not.

Dinner was a bit of a problem as I don’t eat seafood or fish...and the place didn’t have the usual standby steak on the menu.  But the waiter said they had dealt with this before and he’d cook something up.

I would have the same dilemma later at the White House where members of the media (non-DC) were invited to lunch with President Reagan.  Except the   White House cook was ready for those of us discriminating against the eating of a natural preserve like seafood and I did get a nice steak there.

More on this later.

At the track we were ushered into the “owners” section and then one of the three hosts took me by the arm and we got in the betting line.  He slipped me a hundred dollar bill and said “just before we get to the window I’ll whisper in your ear what horse to bet”.

He did just that...I bet the horse to win...and he did.

I picked up an easy four hundred and made my goodbyes and grabbed a cab home.

Now I’ve inquired of several knowledgeable racing friends like Neil Rogers in Miami what this was all about.

i.e. was the race fixed...did they know what horse was the fix?  Or were they just so expert on the horses that this tip was real and on the level from that?

Neil felt it was the latter...he didn’t think a race could be “fixed” at the big Boston track.

Dollar Tree & Family Dollar to merge? Will consumers be winners or losers?

Google is scary #1 & 2

THE FORBIN PROJECT
I POSTED THIS BEFORE CHRISTMAS LAST YEAR.  MORE COMING BELOW!

Science fiction flicks becoming reality?

....it’s possible.  We’ll call it the “Google Project”?

Long before “War Games”...”Andromeda Strain” and others that you’re familiar with...there was
“Colossus:The Forbin Project”.

This was the one where all our military might including the nukes were turned over to a magnificent colossal computer...locked forever in a western mountain by Dr. Forbin himself.

I only bring this up because Hollywood rumor has Ron Howard directing a remake...with the star power of Will Smith.

They have a problem though because the enemy...the Soviets...is not really around...although Putin is trying to bring it back.
So...maybe the bad dudes now would be the NSA, CIA and Google.
At a stretch they could include weird Iran and crazy North Korea.

Who knows where the plot will go and even IF the remake will happen.

Don’t hold your breath on this...and if you can find the original “Forbin Project”...that’s worth viewing.
Mine’s on a VCR cassette.  Remember those things?

Good Guests...& not so good!

Churchill, Harriman, Stalin
                                                                                                                    repost
Guests I have had...and wish I hadn’t.

....the good, the bad and the arrogant!

I’ve done a lot of shows on a lot of networks and stations thru the years so I could compile quite a list but to save your patience...I’ll hit the highlights.

Two men and one woman come to mind who fit the term “arrogant”.

Topping that list would be Averell Harriman...former Governor of New York, Ambassador to Russia during the big war...and this and that in Washington for years.  The “Governor” as he told me he should be addressed (arrogant...right)...was on my Milwaukee talk program for a difficult hour.  It was unpleasant for both of us.

Later, I did have occasion to call his home in Georgetown about a breaking story..but he wasn’t there.  His wife Pamela..who was known as the party woman of Washington was a lot nicer than him and I enjoyed a short conversation with her. Before Harriman, she had been married to Randolph Churchill...Winston’s son.

                                                     -----------------------------

Actress Joan Crawford...did a tough interview with me in Boston.  She was full of herself and basically not working in film anymore but traveling and promoting her husband’s business which as I remember was a soft drink company...a big one. (not Coke). I had studied film and dramatic art was my major in my short college stay and I was well aware of Ms. Crawford’s history and many films...and she was also!
                                                  -------------------------------
Robert Welch...founder of the John Birch Society was my guest in Milwaukee also.  Mr. Welch had started a fire burning on the far right across the country...and probably regretted lowering himself to talk to me.  Oh Well.

Traveling with the biggest name "wrestlers" in the world!

On one of my trips to Vietnam...I flew Japan Airlines (great!) from San Francisco to Tokyo.
After boarding I realized I was sitting amongst some of my Dad’s favorite tv wrestlers....who were headed to Japan!

About  half of those listed above....were on board my flight!
The faces were very familiar and they were all friendly gentlemen.

We landed at Tokyo airport and I looked out the window and sensed the excitement at the terminal upon our arrival.

It appeared that there were about a thousand Japanese wrestling fans atop terminal roof and on the tarmac it looked like every tv crew and photographer in the world were waiting for the American wrestlers to emerge. Ah the impact of tv!
Well, I sensed a problem.  We were back in the “cheap seats” of the plane and the press was crowded around the first class stairs up front awaiting the familiar faces. In Japan “saving face” is everything so I stopped the stewardess and said

“These are famous wrestlers and the press and fans here expect them to come off first class.  Can we turn them around and make that happen?”  (The guys were already heading toward the rear exit.)

She looked out the plane and realized the importance of this and immediately ask the wrestlers to exit from the front!

They turned around and went off the plane that way to the delight of the press and their fans who were screaming and yelling at them.

I felt good about that small deed...as did my Father when I told him about it later.

Remembering General Ky.

While living in Miami in the late 80’s and early 90’s my wife and I took one of the many local flights to the Bahamas for a bit of weekend fun.  Upon boarding I spotted a famous face...that of the press’s favorite South Vietnam hero and former Prime Minister and Air Force General, Nguyen Cao Ky.

As we prepared to leave the plane later I spoke to him...reminding him of our interview back in Saigon and he seemed pleased to be recognized.  Later I saw him hosting a table in the dining room of a casino hotel.

After the war ended he made his home in California and there were all kinds of rumors about what he was into.

The flamboyant fighter pilot died in 2011.

Outside Raiford prison...with link to broadcast for first time!

up, up, and away                                                                               repost with new link

...ugh...not again!
If you read my previous posts about my declaration of NEVER flying in a light plane or chopper again (after three tours of Vietnam...the last for NBC News) then you’ll be amazed that I caved in and did it.
Also because of the tragic death of my friend Bob Collins of WGN Chicago and the crash of NBC News  Chicago anchorman Floyd Kalber into a cornfield not far from our farm (he was unhurt!) well... you know my real feelings.
I was at WIOD Miami doing two hours of talk nightly from 7-9PM
The state of florida was going to “fry” John Spenkelink on May 25, 1979 in the prison in Starke, Florida not far from Gainesville.
I told our boss I’d go up there and tape my next show and he said the traffic guy...Walt Mcdonald...would fly me up and back in his plane.
I wasn’t happy about that but Starke had no airport for jet planes so what else could I do.
Walt was a great guy and a lot of fun and (thank god) a really accomplished pilot.  We had first met in Philly where he did traffic reports for WWDB the Talk Station when I was there.   Now he did the same for us in Miami-Ft. Lauderdale.
All the way up there (it was evening...getting dark) I was tense and he sensed it and tried to take my mind off it but didn’t succeed.
Once there with my feet thankfully and safely on the ground I went about covering the story.  The press was massive as this was the first execution since the Supreams had made it legal again.
One of the first press guys I ran into was my old combat correspondent buddy from Saigon...Kenley Jones.  He was happy to see me and in from Atlanta to cover the killing festivities for NBC News.
They fried Spenkelink...and I taped a bunch of stuff and Walt and I headed for the airstrip and his plane.
I’d like to say I slept on the trip back but I didn’t.
After we touched down at the small airport near the radio station...I renewed my vow “never again”...but not outloud.
I thanked Walt for the  good job and we went our separate ways.  but...for me...never again, again!
I know what some of you will say.
“You're safer up in that plane than on the highway!”
thanks...but I’ll stick to the highway.

She's back...Kait Parker "hot" weather girl freezing her pretty tush in the D.C. storm!

Kait Parker...The Weather Channel

      Big Snow storms...East Coast                                                                repost

I worked for years and lived with my parents off and on in suburban Mt. Prospect

about ten miles from the loop.
We had what I guess you can call the “storm of the century” sometime back in the 60’s

Everyone was snowed in...couldn’t go anywhere...and the stores ran out of food so
there was no use being open.
I persisted in shoveling the snow off our driveway (don’t know why) and by the time

I got it clear enough more snow would be replacing the snow I just shoveled.
I finally just gave up.
In Philly..we got hit hard overnight and I had to get into work...I was

program manager at WWDB The Talk Station (80’s) and was expected to be there
unsure that anyone else would be.
MY girlfriend had just bought a small Plymouth which, thank god, had a the

new “front wheel” steering capability and I was rolling up and down the small hills
on the Main Line passing up stuck motorists like you wouldn’t believe.
I got to work before the snow plows did and was thankful Richard Hayes

our all night talk host was still on site and willing to work. He actually lived on
Long Island and drove back and forth each day..but he couldn’t get out of our parking
 lot!
A few others made it in but I gotta say that front wheel drive invention was a

great one!

...On Kait Parker...on the Weather Channel...I searched for a good pic of her but Goggle really doesn’t have one.  The photo above is ok...but it’s interesting how good she looks live at the weather map...almost “sensual” at times with her moves. She’s nearly too sexy to be on the Weather Channel!  It’s a distraction...and one can’t really take their eyes off her to pay attention to the weather stuff.  I could compare it to that volleyball star in Europe whose coach said he was going to cut her from the team because she was a “sexy distraction”.
And who’s responsible for the outfits worn by the meteorologists on the Weather Channel?  I’ve never seen such crappy clothes...mainly on the women.
Kait Parker’s deep blue dress yesterday was right on....but drop the six inch heels Kaity...you don’t need them!
Wow I love to watch her move! (EVEN IN THE SNOW STORM IN D.C.....MOVING LIKE YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE.  SENSUOUS!
check her out:

The saddist words in the world..."What might have been."

Here’s a sad love story...not with me...but with me being the “bad” guy in the end.
Back in 1984 when I was riding high on WWDB The Talk Station in Philadelphia...doing a highly rated talk program every afternoon...I gained the acquaintance of a very pretty young lady...blond (these are the kind I marry) and we had a short lived “affair”.
Short lived because I became involved with a staffer at the station..and it was like “going steady” time in that.
I hadn’t seen the blond girl...let’s call her Connie (only the first initial is correct) for some weeks and when I was leaving work one afternoon she pulls up in the parking lot and stops.
I spotted her and as she put the window down on the passenger side I approached to see what was up.
“I have to talk to you” she said and I replied “about what?”
    “I’m in love with you!”
With that I was taken back a bit. We had not been serious together...it was more of a “fling” than anything else...but fun on both sides. Neither of us had gotten serious.
“I’m flattered that you feel that way Connie...but I’m involved with someone now and I really can’t see you anymore.”
She looked very sad...not angry...just kind of forlorned.
“I’m sorry...I said.  “I hope you can understand.”
Then she just put the window up in my face...and drove away.
In defense of her I must say she didn’t make a big scene as my fellow workers passed by...and she didn’t cause any trouble in the pursuing days and weeks after the surprising encounter.  In fact I have never talked to her since that parking lot scene.
But I’ve often thought about it and her and the strange encounter which basically came out of the blue and startled me.
The person I was involved with at the time broke up with me later and ended up marrying someone else....as did I.
I hope Connie went on and found really true love and has been happy all these years.  I still have her parents phone number and have been tempted on more than one occasion to place a call and see how things worked out.  But...best to let bygones be just that.

Kate & Wills are in the Islands...Pippa too! So close but so far away!

....Our friend Randy, (remember the Elle story!)
who is an expert on good cigars...sent me a half dozen of his... primarily Montecristo and Cohibas.  They enclosed the invoice so I perused the prices.
The Montecristo seems normal...about $6.65 for each which in this day and age is not that bad. But I nearly fell off my chair when I saw the price of the Cohiba:

                                                           $16.80 EACH !!!

I have a problem if the damn cigar costs a dollar...thinking that’s too expensive.
So I sent him an e-mail saying I enjoyed my first Montecristo....
“but when I saw the price on the Cohiba...I didn’t know whether to smoke it or get it gold plated!”

Here’s his response:
“That sounds like what my wife said when I bought a box of them.
I told her, "Now listen, Emelda Marcos the Second. You by shoes, wear them once and then toss 'em to the back of the closet never to be worn again
while proclaiming them the wrong color or style. I smoke my cigars once, toss the ashes and remains into the hedges & flower beds around the porches. Keeps the Mosquitos down while I smoke them and helps the flowers grow in the spring.
    I get my money's worth. You don't.”
 Still lost the argument.

Run Sarah Run!

 Run Sarah Run!

...I still want to see the big “cat fight” between Palin and Clinton.
With the nation’s voters realizing there will (finally) be a woman President of these United States that surely should bring the female voters out by the droves.
Clinton will have the Obama years to overcome...so Sarah should have a pretty good chance to clean house (White that is).

Here’s more...but keep in mind the liberal source after you click:

    “TOLL BY PLATE”?
    What the hell is this?
I used to take our Sawgrass Expressway (not on GPS thank you) but not for a year or so and I saw the new signs...toll by license plate only and immediately wondered what they do if you are out of state..and there’s a bunch of those in Florida...or if you don’t even have a plate.
    Questions...questions and more questions.
I don’t very much believe everything an automated computer tells me...so I’ll just not drive up there anymore.  Wonder how much the collection fees are biting into the tollway’s profits?
But...not my problem.

The old adage “Buy American” isn’t heard much anymore.  That’s because we don’t make stuff much...China and other Asian nations replaced us long ago. So I was surprised and “heartened” to see this article about what WE DO still make.
Check it out...for your after holiday buying:

....I’m sad.  We’ve lost track of “Christy”...one of a trio of young ladies I’ve been following (not literally) because this college age girl had no email...(but she did access this blog to read about herself) and maybe no cell phone.
I dropped in to the supermarket where I found her and spotted a manager and ask him “where is______”
(her real first name) and he said “not here anymore”.    so that’s, that.
Unless she shows herself via e-mailing me I guess we’ll never actually know if she does have a cell phone or not.
